Bathurst Panorama Compete in Harmony Classic

Congratulations to Bathurst Panorama Chorus, who came in 4th (by quite a margin) in the small chorus section of the Harmony Classic 2007, and definitely had the most entertaining package of any of the choruses on the day. This was proven by the fact that Bathurst got the most number of bonus points in the competition !

The dialogue was clever, well presented and the emcee's used excellent microphone technique and pacing. It really was fantastic ! When they sang "I Am Australian" at the beginning of their package, it was impossible to hold back the tears and from what I heard every Australian in the audience was the same! They did a great job on their competition songs too. Very clean and energised. Great job girls ! You did us proud !

Eisteddfod Success In WA

Mad About Ewe competed in the Central South Eisteddfod in May and gained 1st place in the Adult Choral section. They performed "Over the Rainbow" and "Straighten Up and Fly Right", and scored 98/100. This was their third appearance in the Central South Eisteddfod, and their 3rd 1st placement.

In September, Audacious!, BlackJaQ and Mad About Ewe quartets competed in the Joondalup Eisteddfod, placing 1st, tied 2nd and Highly Commended respectively.  Another quartet (not affiliated with SAI but made up of 4 Sweet Adelines) called JJAM, tied with BlackJaQ for second, in the 4-6 voice section, newly designated as "including Barbershop Quartets". The profile of barbershop is certainly being raised by the high standard of our artform demonstrated by these 4 quartets!

Musical Island Boys in Perth for Youth Festival

Here in the West we have just experienced the most amazing time with the Musical Island Boys from New Zealand. Thanks to a group of people from the Barbershop Community here who had a vision back in 2004 to bring them to Perth they have been here this last week and been an absolute blessing to us all. Over 600 school and tertiary students attended workshops and The Big Barbershop Day Out which culminated in a marvellous concert last night where the standing ovations were numerous.

Young people in Perth have been taught, coached, fed and t-shirted free of charge. To see the looks of awe and inspiration on the faces at the show's finale as they listened to the Musical Island Boys was a treat.

It took a lot of organization and hard work by some very dedicated people together with cooperation of many. To be congratulated is the Youth in Barbershop Development Initiative committee who worked so hard and successfully obtained grants and sponsorship. Sponsorship of local Barbershop Choruses and quartets also played an important role.

I am so proud to know Sweet Adelines of the calibre of Helen Verhoeff, Rae Knight and Mary Leonard who were key movers and shakers in what became a mammoth operation. I reckon they should all still be asleep this morning!

Some tears were shed at the airport last night as Jeff, Lusa, Matt and Will together with their beautiful coach Charlotte Murray went through the gateway. What a fine example to us all they are and what marvellous role models those boys are for young people.

Saying we would recommend such an experience to other barbershop communities around the country is an understatement!

Eisteddfod Success for Australian Sweet Adelines

Several choruses, quartets and other composite groups of Sweet Adelines have been competing in local eisteddfods around the nation recently, and here are the stories of their successes!

Congratulations to Brindabella Chorus, placing 4th in the ACT State Finals and to Endeavour Harmony Chorus, placing 3rd in the NSW State Finals for the ABC Choir of the Year contest.

Brisbane City Sounds, under the direction of Deb Wenzel, came 2nd in the barbershop section of the Brisbane Eisteddfod in August.  They were beaten by 16 points by none other than The Blenders!!

Brindabella Chorus competed at the National Eisteddfod held in Canberra. The chorus, quartets and an octet delivered some really good performances, and to our surprise and delight, we won every single category we entered.

Brindabella at rehearsal with all their trophies!

In the 4-8 voices, Synchronicity conquered those stage nerves that plagued us at contest to place first, with Starstruck Oz coming in a close second.  In the 8 - 20 voices, the two quartets combined (with one last minute personnel change) to become an octet called 'Pieces of Eight'. We won the section ahead of three other groups, all of whom had at least double the number of singers. Then we won the Ladies Open Choral for the fourth time in five years.

The last event of the night was the City of Canberra Championship, which is the major prize. We have competed in this particular category for the last six years and often come second or third, but this year we beat some of the previous winners and came first! The perpetual trophy is a ridiculously large cup, the kind of thing that football teams win at the grand final, which is a lot of fun. I'll be putting a photo up on our chorus website later on so you can have a laugh over it too. The basses are happily debating what sort of alcoholic beverage to fill it with!

The other award was the Conductor's Award, a new award this year. Conductors of all the choirs over the two days and nights of competition, including all the school choirs, were eligible for this award. I was really thrilled when the adjudicator called my name out! I think it's really a testament to the level of education that Sweet Adelines provides.

The adjudicator was the director of the Pembroke Choir in Adelaide, and has seen us perform before. He commented on the improvement in the chorus. It's really great to see this recognised, and also very rewarding to see that barbershop is being treated as a serious artform in the choral world, as evidenced by the success that many choruses have had in mainstream choral contests in recent times.

East City Sound competed in the Open A Capella Section of an eisteddfod in Waverley. Vic.

Every contestant in all choral sections of the eisteddfod was eligible for a special award of $500 donated by ANCA for the best performance of an Australian composition and WE WON! What did we sing? We have been working on "Never Never" and thought we were singing it pretty well. Happily the adjudicator thought so too!

Another small step for barbershop.

Bathurst Panorama Chorus successfully defended their Open Choral Championship title at the City of Orange Eisteddfod (and added $800 to our Texas fund!). The section was a real mix of young and old and every style so we didn't envy the adjudicator trying to make a comparison - but when he commented that what he looked for was technical skills enhanced by a presentation that was entertaining and shared the message of the song with the audience - it all sounded very familiar to Sweet Adeline ears!

Audacious! and Espionage successfully combined to form an octet called Espionacious for the 6-20 voice section of the Joondalup Eisteddfod in Perth.

Scoring 90% for their performance of Old Routine and Sound Celebration, we took out the category with ease!  We're hoping for an invitation to sing at the winners' concert, although we already know we won't be able to do it as 3 members will be in Las Vegas and one will be 8 months pregnant by then!
