You are here: Home Conventions Convention 2012 Canberra Quartet Competitors

What do I need to do to compete at Convention?

Each quartet must: (a) register to compete in the regional competition. (click here); and (b) book to attend regional convention (click here).

Does your quartet want to compete in Canberra?

Then there are a few things you need to know:

1. Contestants should be familiar with the Competition Handbook published by Sweet Adelines International.  You can download this handbook from the International website after you have registered your quartet.

2. You need to have registered your new quartet name or renewed your existing name with Sweet Adelines International. The paperwork for new or renewing quartets must be submitted and processed before they may register with International for competition. New quartets or renewals received after January 15 will be charged additional registration fees.

3. You need to register name and personnel to compete in regional competition by filling in an on-line form QR-1 (which is done through the Sweet Adelines International website (click here). Please note you will need your SAI membership number handy to enter the members only area.  You then need to look for "Quartet Registration" in the site map (top RH corner).  The fee for registration is $80 USD and you can pay through the website using your credit card.

The deadline date for a quartet to register name and personnel (Form QR-1) for competition with the Membership Services Department at International Headquarters is 19 March, 2012  – 60 days prior to the date of competition.

4. You need to book to attend convention in Canberra (click here). Please note that if each quartet member is being booked to attend Convention by a chorus you don't need to also do this individually.  There is provision in the chorus information to provide your quartet name.

5. Make sure you attend the events especially for competing quartets:

  • Thur 17 May, 2012:  Quartet Chorus Rehearsal*, Llewellyn Hall, 5:30 - 6:30 pm
  • Thur 17 May, 2012:  Quartet walk-throughs, Llewellyn Hall, 6:30 - 8:30 pm
  • Thurs 17 May, 2012:  Quartet drinks (while waiting for turns at the walk-through),
    Llewllyn Hall, 6:30 - 8:30 pm
  • Friday 18 May, 2012:  QUARTET COMPETITION!!!, Llewellyn Hall, 12:30 - 8:30 pm. Traffic Pattern
  • *  Please note that each competing quartet is invited to sing with the Quartet Chorus each year.  The 2012 Quartet Chorus will be directed by Glenda Lloyd and Lea Baker.  The songs for the 2012 Quartet Chorus are:
      1. Shelter (Glenda Lloyd directing)
      2. I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing (Part A) (Lea Baker directing)

Learning tracks are available in the members area of this website. Please have these songs learnt well before Convention.  You will be contacted with more information about the chorus in the coming months.

6. Attend the quartet walk-through. This event enables you to walk across the stage, do a brief test of the acoustics and walk-off.  It is strongly recommended that all quartets attend.

7. Do you subscribe to the Aussie Quartetters newsletter?  If not please contact Mary-Anne Cosgrove, Regional Quartet Coordinator.  Click here to send Mary-Anne an email.

8. Contestants must notify International Headquarters promptly, in writing (no phone calls), if they find it necessary to withdraw from the competition.

Other Quartet Info

Copyright

If you haven’t already done so,  please return your copyright form to Julia Woodruff by 20 April together with a contact number for your quartet over the competition weekend.

Mic-Testing Chorus

Can you also please advise Julia Woodruff if any members of your quartet are able to be a part of the mic testing chorus from 4-5pm on Thursday afternoon.

Quartet Walkthroughs

See the schedule for quartet walkthroughs on the Thursday evening .  Quartets will walk around the traffic pattern in groups and then each quartet will have 2 minutes on the stage.  The walkthroughs will start at 6.30pm, straight after the Quartet chorus rehearsal.  Meet in the foyer of Llewellyn Hall - please make sure that you are on time if you wish to participate.

Joint Quartet/Chorus Briefing

I also need to remind you that at least one member of your quartet must attend the joint quartet/chorus briefing on Friday morning commencing at 9am in Llewellyn Hall.

Traffic Pattern

See the traffic pattern times for the quartet competition on Friday.   The time shown as ‘Arrive School of Music’ is the LATEST time at which your quartet should be assembled and ready to enter the traffic pattern.

Photos will be taken in the primp room and then quartets will move to the warm up room.  As you leave the warm up room you may leave a small bag of personal items, including your registration lanyards, with the ushers.  This will be handed back to your quartet after you have left the stage.

Please make sure that you all bring your lanyards with you.  You will NOT be allowed into the auditorium without your lanyard - even if you are in costume.
